Here are the five books I most recommend (and short descriptions for each):
โถ๏ธ "Pay Matters" by David Weaver, CCA
ย This book helped me kick off my journey into compensation. In my opinion, it's the best introductory book on the market. It's easy to follow and understand. It's even entertaining sometimes.
โถ๏ธ"The Compensation Handbook" by Lance Berger and Dorothy Berger
ย This book is the deep source of truth for everything compensation. It's my go-to guide anytime I need a refresher or more explanations on a concept or strategy.
โถ๏ธ "Scaling Up Compensation" by Verne Harnish and Sebastian Ross
ย In my opinion, this book is the second-best book after The Compensation Handbook. The real-world examples in the book helped me understand how everything can work together and how every strategy impacts employees and companies.
โถ๏ธย "Compensating the Sales Force" by David Cichelli
ย This book was a recommended read from Scaling up Compensation. I'm glad I decided to read it. We all know how tricky variable compensation can be. Not only is this book a practical guide for sales compensation design, but it's also highly actionable and filled with great advice and market best practices.
โถ๏ธ "Equity Alternatives by The National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO)
ย For those who want to diversify their compensation toolkit, this book explains the complex landscape of equity compensation. Although it's mostly focused on the US market, it's a great read to understand the different types of equity options, how they work, and how they can best be combined to form effective total rewards strategies.
